The University of Padua works to eliminate gender-related discrimination, violence and stereotypes through institutional actions and through cultural and educational interventions. To mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which falls on 25 November, the University is proposing a wide range of initiatives to promote gender parity.
Across their lifetime, 1 in 3 women are subject to some form of violence, whether it be physical, psychological, emotional, economic, or sexual. The cultural root of violence against women affects everyone. Every three days a woman in Italy falls victim to femicide. Giulia Cecchettin is one of the 106 women who have been killed in Italy since the beginning of 2023; 87 were killed by a family member or someone they knew, 55 died at the hands of their partner or former partner.
The University has joined two awareness-raising initiatives to fight violence and support the right to freedom and to live without fear: an empty chair at events hosted by the university and a red bench, this year placed at the Department of Information Engineering, to highlight the void left by women who were victims of violence.
