Giorgio Parisi
Complexity from a physicist’s point of view
Honorary doctorate and Nobel lecture
Rector Daniela Mapelli will award an honorary doctorate in Physics to Giorgio Parisi, for his pioneering contributions in the fields of theoretical elementary particle physics, quantum field theory and statistical physics, and particularly for discovering the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems at all possible scales, a result that earned him the Nobel prize in Physics in 2021. The award ceremony will feature a Nobel lecture, titled La complessità vista da un fisico (Complexity from a physicist’s point of view), in which Professor Parisi will discuss his research. This ranges across different areas of physics, including particle physics, statistical mechanics, fluid dynamics, condensed matter physics and supercomputers. On Monday 30 January at 5pm in the Aula Magna at Palazzo del Bo.
Daniel Libeskind
Designing memories for the human future
Incontro
Architect Daniel Libeskind, one of the leading figures of deconstructivism, will be joined by Professor in Didactics and Special Education Marina Santi (University of Padua) for a conversation on design in an educational and social context, besides an architectural and artistic one. The event will include interludes of jazz music (performed by Jimmy Weinstein, Lilli Santon and Alessandro Fedrigo), providing a further opportunity for reflection during the interview with Mr Libeskind. His work often explores the themes of surprise, uncertainty and improvisation, which are relevant to our times and guide his political and ethical approach to architecture and design. On Friday 3 February at 5pm in the Aula Magna at Palazzo del Bo.

Following Padua’s success in gaining a second entry in Unesco’s World Heritage List, the Liviano library is hosting a temporary exhibition of materials that tell the history of the city’s 14th century fresco cycles and the research relating to them: the exhibition includes early and modern printed books, periodicals, and music (both recordings and printed materials). Free entry during library opening times. Until 27 January in the Library of Antiquities, Art and Music at Palazzo Liviano.

The Italian Cultural Institute in Madrid will host an event titled Agustín Albanell, un aragonese a Padova (Agustín Albanell, an Aragonese in Padua), in which Unipd economic history professor Giovanni Luigi Fontana will tell the story of Albanell, a Spanish jurist, humanist, diplomat and bishop who attended the universities of Bologna and Padua between 1536 and 1541 and was the author of important studies spanning legal history and numismatics, besides participating in the first Spanish translation of the Odyssey.
