* HR - Excellence in Research
On 6 October 2021 the University of Padua received the consensus report following the site visit, that took place on 20 September, aimed at evaluating the renewal of the HR - Excellence in Research accreditation. The overall judgment is excellent and Unipd is indicated as a model of good practice for the implementation of the HR Excellence in Research strategy.

"The University is in and of itself a model of best practice in the area of HR Excellence in Research and are to be commended for their endeavours in this area. The Virtual Site visit was organised and executed to a very high professional standard".

* EHDEN Data Partner Call
The European Health Data and Evidence Network (EHDEN) invites Data partners in Europe to apply for funding to map their health data using the OMOP common data model. The goal is to standardise more than 100 million patient records across Europe from different geographic areas and different data sources. EHDEN launches the 5th open call for data partner. A maximum of 100.000 Euro per Data Partner can be made available to financial support the harmonisation efforts. Preferences for applications are as follows: countries not yet represented (or minimally)  in the EHDEN network; datasets with granular data, datasets with longer term follow-up; in-patient data; PROs, PREMs and HRQoL; (not exclusively) rare/autoimmune/inflammatory disease dataset; cancer therapies and registries; medical devices

* Call for interest to participate in the activities of the European research networks, 2022-2024
The University of Padua supports the involvement of its researchers in the activities of the European research networks to foster international collaborations and increase the number of proposals submitted in the European funding programmes.
To this end the International Research Office has published the call for interest to participate in the activities of the European research networks, 2022-2024.
The application can be submitted by research groups formed by Full and/or Associate Professors and researchers, with or without a permanent position, affiliated with different Departments or Centers of the university.
The university will fund up to 50% of the total eligible costs incurred by the research groups in implementing the activities within the European network with a maximum of 10.000 Euros/year.

* ERN Research Mobility Fellowship
This call, launched by the European Reference Network (ERN) on rare diseases, aims to support PhD students, Postdocs and medical doctors in training to acquire new competences and knowledge related to their research on rare diseases outside their countries of residence.
The exchange can be carried out either:
within the same ERN or between different ERNs or between ERN and non-ERN institutions.
The research mobility fellowship may last from 4 weeks to 6 months.

* Italian Fund for Science
With D.D. 2281 of 09/28/2021, published on the MUR website on 09/29/2021, was issued the Competitive Procedure for the development of fundamental research activities, from the Italian Science Fund, aimed at the development of fundamental research activities through the financing of projects proposed by Principal Investigators (PI) of any nationality, which have chosen as Host Institution the Italian Universities and Institutions identified in art. 2, paragraph 2 of the aforementioned decree.
The total budget of the Procedure is equal to 50 million Euros for the year 2021, where 20 millions are allocated to the funding of fundamental research projects conducted by emerging researchers (Starting Grant) and 30 millions are intended for fundamental research projects conducted by established researchers (Advanced Grant).
The maximum cost of the projects is set at 1 million Euros for the Starting Grants scheme and 1.5 millions Euros for the Advanced Grant line.

* EU4HEALTH Programme
The 2021 EU4Health Work Programme launches 13 new Action Grants with an overall budget of 7 million Euros. The funded projects will be managed by the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA).
The Action Grants (dal EU4H-2021-PJ-06 al EU4H-2021-PJ-18) cover several topics: health data, healthy lifestyle, infectious diseases, mental health, cancer, genomics and more.

* CERV-2022-CITIZENS-CIV: Citizens’ engagement and participation
The call support projects promoted by transnational partnerships and networks directly involving citizens and representative associations. The call covers a variety of policy areas, and aims to contribute to the promotion of EU values, the rule of law, fundamental rights and democracy. A specific focus will be on: 2024 European Parliament elections; effects of the COVID-19 crisis on the democratic debate the enjoyment of fundamental rights; e-democracy; countering disinformation; engaging citizens in discussions and actions relating to climate and environment.
Funding is through lump sum.

* Patenting Software and Artificial intelligence
On Monday, 15 November 2021 at 2:30 pm, eng. Giovanni Demegni of Società Italiana Brevetti SpA will be holding a webinar on intellectual property protection around software, artificial intelligence and internet of things.

* National Recovery and Resilience Plan: the guidelines for the system initiatives of Mission 4 Component 2
The Guidelines precede the emanation of the calls regarding the research of the M4C2 supply chain of the PNRR and contain an overview and key information for potential participants in order to facilitate their adherence to the calls.
The system initiatives of Mission 4, Component 2, aim at:
- strengthen research and encourage the spread of innovative models for basic and applied research conducted in synergy between universities, research bodies and public or private subjects engaged in R&D activities;
- support processes for innovation and technology transfer;
- enhance research and innovation infrastructures, capital and skills to support innovation;
The system interventions currently planned are four and will use just over 6 billion Euros of the 9 within the competence of the Mur.
Investments will be accessed through calls that will be published within the first quarter of 2022.
The calls are aimed at selecting:
- 5 "national research and development champions" (National Centers) on some enabling technologies;
- up to 12 "innovation ecosystems";
- at least 10 major fundamental research projects proposed by «extended partnerships» made up of universities, research centers and companies;
- up to 30 research and technological innovation infrastructures.
* C-Lab Veneto project awards
Contamination Lab Veneto is an innovative project of the University of Padua, now at its fourth edition, during which multidisciplinary teams of students and graduates responded to a challenge launched by companies and partner institutions by identifying an innovative solution, as well as attending courses on entrepreneurial issues.
During the Galileo Festival, the following best projects were awarded:

1st PRIZE - "EarthCARE:  recovery and reuse of pharmaceutical glass syringes": design and construction of a prototype machine created to allow - directly in hospital wards - the regulatory assimilation of syringes to differentiated urban waste.

2nd CLASSIFIED - "IrriBANC": design of a qualitative method based on a multidimensional elaboration of agronomic, economic, legal, social and territorial factors, able to provide advice on the most suitable irrigation technology for the needs of the farmer and the territory.
Company associated with the team: Crédit Agricole FriulAdria.

3rd PLACE TIED - "CONNECT": creation of a prototype of a digital platform to support the municipality's youth policies, designed for more effective organisation, communication and evaluation of extracurricular projects for young people in the area.
Team member: Municipality of Padua.

3rd PLACE WITH EQUAL MERIT - "PARIS INDEX": creation of an index capable of communicating the environmental impact of OVS products to all stakeholders, avoiding greenwashing operations.

* E-Storage srl is a new University spin-off
The purpose of the spin-off is the design and implementation of electrochemical storage systems for fixed (in conjunction with renewable energy sources) and mobile (in electric vehicles) use. The founding partners will be responsible for the design, commercial and administrative activities, while other services will initially be provided by Start Cube.

* OPIGEO Srl is now a University of Padua spin-off
The company, established in June 2020, deals with the study, analysis and valorization of the use of industrial waste materials, in particular inorganic materials for construction (cements, adhesives, geopolymers, ceramic materials, stone materials). Its services include new products, the analysis of industrial processes and treatments, the valorization of industrial by-products.

* Start Cup Veneto 2021 
The 20th edition of Start Cup Veneto, the business plan competition organized by the University of Padua, Verona and IUAV, awarded the top 5 entrepreneurial teams, of which four from UniPD:
 
- 1st place Life Science: DNA Switch
a new therapeutic approach for neurodegenerative diseases based on the activation of genes (UNIPD)
- 2nd place Cleantech & Energy: TUNICA
Marine invertebrates for circular economy: an alternative, sustainable source of cellulose, bioethanol and feedstock for aquaculture. (UNIPD)
- 3rd place: Industrial: ELEMENTO
Ele is a designer lamp, its shape is the archetype of Light. It switches on with a touch on its entire surface, thanks to a new capacitive technology. (IUAV)
- 4th place: TOO BUSY
TooBusy is a new way to plan public transportation to make it efficient, flexible and respectful of user privacy. (UNIPD)
- 5th place Cleantech & Energy: INNOVATION GEO MATERIALS
Innovative geopolymers made from production waste, with lower CO2 emissions, according to a Circular Economy vision.

* Informal exploratory talks for association to Horizon Europe
As per 12 October 2021, the European Commission has successfully concluded the formal negotiations for an association to Horizon Europe also with the Faroe Islands, Israel and Tunisia.
At the EU-Ukraine Summit in Kyiv, the EU and Ukraine signed the agreement that associates Ukraine to Horizon Europe and Euratom Research & Training programme.
Delays in joining Horizon Europe affect Switzerland and the UK.
The agreement between UK and EU is still missing. UK researchers can still apply for Horizon Europe grants, however, the association will have to be reached before the grant agreements are signed (expected around March 2022).
