Intercultural mediation service for international researchers
The on-call intercultural mediation service is now available: Departments can contact SAOS to receive information and support in managing coming researchers of the University of Padua, and in dealing with procedures for their entry/residence/stay.

SAOS (Servizio Accoglienza Ospiti Stranieri) is a welcome desk, which assists incoming international students and scholars (researchers, visiting professors, experts) in organising and completing the most important procedures related to their legal stay in Italy (entry and stay in Italy, residence permit application/renewal/transfer, public health assistance).

Information materials and an explanatory video are available in the International Research Office Moodle area (access allowed with Single Sign On - SSO).

AACR Immuno-oncology Research Fellowships
The Immuno-oncology Research Fellowships, funded by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), is now open. The two-year fellowship provides 120,000 dollars to conduct research on immuno-oncology. It covers the researchers’ salary and research costs. At the start date of the project (1st July 2022) applicants must: 

1. Be postdoctoral fellows, or equivalent;
2. Have obtained the doctorate after 1st July 2017. Applicants with a medical degree must have completed their most recent doctorate or medical specialty within the past five years;
3. Work in partnership with an academic, medical or research institution supervisor.

* Spencer Foundation, Research Grants on Education: Large
The Large Research Grants on Education Program supports education research projects that will contribute to the improvement of education, with budgets ranging from 125,000 to 500,000 dollars for projects ranging from one to five years. Applicant Principal Investigators (PIs) and Co-PIs must have obtained a doctoral degree in an education research-related research field. The Spencer Foundation does not award grants directly to individuals, but to the administering organization (e.g. their host universities).

The U.S. Fulbright Commission offers scholarships for research projects at US universities reserved to Italian citizens.

* INTERREG Alpine Space
The transnational cooperation program of the Alpine region, Alpine Space, has opened the first two calls of the 2021-2027 programming period: a call for classic projects with a maximum total budget of 25 million euros and a call for small-scale projects with a maximum total budget of 5 million euros.

Deadline for submission of project proposals:

* NIH-NICHD PAR-21-353 (R01), PAR-21-354 (R03), PAR-21-355 (R21): Approaches and Therapies for Screenable Disorders in Newborns (Clinical Trial Optional)
NIH-NICHD has published an international funding opportunity announcement (FOA) to encourage research relevant to the development of novel screening approaches and/or therapeutic interventions for potentially fatal or disabling conditions that have been identified through newborn screening, as well as for "high priority" genetic conditions where screening may be possible in the near future.
- R01 supports mature projects that are hypothesis-driven with strong preliminary data, with the possibility to reapply before the end of the project. Duration up to 5 years, unlimited budget.
- R03 supports tightly focused projects (no preliminary data needed) able to be completed in 2 years, and manageable with a maximum of 100,000 dollars in direct costs over the two-year period.
- R21 encourages exploratory, highly innovative, high-risk/high-gain research by providing support for the early and conceptual stages of project development. Duration up to 2 years, budget up to 275,000 dollars in direct costs over two years.

* The Branco Weiss Fellowship
is now open and offers 10 scholarships, each worth CHF 100,000 per year to cover the researcher's salary and other research expenses.
It is aimed at postdoctoral researchers in all disciplines, who earned a PhD at the latest 5 years before January 15, 2022. Applicants must have a project that departs from the research mainstream in that discipline and have achieved a record of outstanding scientific achievements.

Call opening: 15/01/2022 at 5:00 pm. CET

* The NOSTER & Science Microbiome Prize 
is an international award that recognizes innovative research conducted by investigators under the age of 35 who are working on the functional attributes of the microbiota. The top prize includes a USD 25,000 cash award, an online subscription to Science and the winning essay published in Science. Participants must hold an M.D., Ph.D., or M.D./Ph.D at the time of entry, and have received their degree in the last 10 years.
The applicant must have done or directed all of the work and it must have been performed in the past three years.

* Aspen Institute Italia Award for research and scientific collaboration between Italy and the United States
The Prize, scheduled annually, consists of a cash amount of 40,000 euros and will be awarded to research in the field of natural sciences, carried out jointly by Italian and/or research organizations exclusively or mainly from the United States. Specific relevance can be attributed to research that has had a widespread and recognized application in product or process innovation or in the supply of innovative goods or services.
Candidate research must have been recently carried out and published, also in the form of an abstract, by one or more scientific journals after 1 January 2015.

* Uni-Impresa 2021- kick off event 
Uni-Impresa kick off event  will take place on December 15th, 5 - 7 pm, Aula Nievo at Bo Building with the participation of the projects financed in 2018.
The Uni-Impresa call for innovative projects in partnership with companies or other institutions will open soon: this year the University of Padua has financed Uni-Impresa with 465.000 euros.

National recovery and resilience plan: from the Guidelines to the calls. The calendar of "system initiatives" is now available
The call calendar, financed with the resources of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan has been published by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR).
According to the calendar, 8 calls will be published by the end of 2021 and another 6 are expected in 2022, two of which are in progress. The intended amount is indicated for each intervention. The financial allocation of 738.556.000,00 euros dedicated to the Prin 2021 call is considerably higher than the endowment of 178.943.692,36 euros in the previous 2020 call.

* Intellectual Property Award 2021: eight Unipd patents shortlisted
The Ministry of Economic Development created the Intellectual Property Award to promote the best Italian innovation from academic research.
Eight technologies developed at the University of Padua have passed the first selection phase. You can watch their video pitches here.

Keep your fingers crossed for the next step: five inventors from each category will be selected to present their technology at the Italian Pavillion at the Expo in Dubai!


* Doctoral Programme MSCA-COFUND "UNIPhD - Training the next-generation talents"
The Doctoral Programme “UNIPhD - Eight century legacy of multidisciplinary research and training for the next-generation talents” will open in January 2022. It has been co-funded by the European Commission in the framework of Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action COFUND (Horizon 2020) and by the Veneto Region.
The global call for applications offers a total of 50 fellowships with the aim of recruiting excellent incoming transnational ESRs, in all scientific areas.
The webpage dedicated to the promotion of the call has been activated and the Info Sheet of the project, which summarizes the main aspects of the call, has been published.

* STARS@UNIPD 2021 funding programme
Through the call for proposals STARS Grants 2021, the University of Padua funds 47 excellent young researchers with more than 7 million euros budget. The winners have been selected by three Committees in the scientific research areas corresponding to the three ERC research domains: PE - Physical Sciences and Engineering, LS – Life Sciences, SH – Social Sciences and Humanities.
STARS GRANTS 2021 grantees will start their projects in 2022 and are committed to submitting an ERC application indicating Padua as their host institution.
